Co-op expands franchise network with two new Russell Group campus stores

Co-op expands franchise network and is set to open new franchise stores at Glasgow and Birmingham universities

Co-op is continuing the expansion of its franchise operation with two new university campus stores set to open ahead of the new academic year in September.

The convenience retailer has confirmed new franchise partnerships with the University of Glasgow and the University of Birmingham, both members of the Russell Group.

The latest additions will increase Co-op’s total number of university campus locations to 14. Existing campus stores already operate at Russell Group universities including University of Leeds, Newcastle University and University of Warwick.

The new stores are being designed to cater specifically to student lifestyles, with a focus on speed and convenience. Features will include multiple self-service checkout points aimed at helping manage peak-time demand across busy campus environments.

Co-op said its franchise division grew by 16% to reach 65 stores by the end of 2025, with ambitions to exceed 100 franchise locations during 2026. Planned expansion areas include university campuses, hospitals, petrol forecourts and partnerships with independent retailers.

The retailer’s existing university campus estate currently serves an estimated student population of more than 200,000, representing a 25% increase year-on-year. That figure is expected to rise beyond 300,000 during 2026 as additional stores open.

The franchise operation is also contributing to Co-op’s wider membership growth strategy. More than 50,000 new members joined through its franchise stores during 2025, with customers benefiting from member-only pricing, personalised offers and promotions.

Jonathan Perry, Head of Franchise Development at Co-op, said: “We’re delighted to confirm our latest franchise partnerships and to be working with the Universities of Birmingham and Glasgow.

“These stores are designed to become genuine campus hubs, offering quality products and great value with a proposition tailored to the pace and needs of university life. Whether people are studying, living, working or visiting, Co-op is focused on bringing the benefits of Co-op membership to more locations while supporting diverse and dynamic campus communities.”

Peter Kelland, Head of Retail and Brands at the University of Birmingham, added: “We’re really looking forward to opening the new Co-op on campus, giving students easy access to affordable, high-quality food in a space designed around university life.

“Co-op’s strong commitment to sustainability and community aligns closely with our values, and I am confident it will exceed both students’ and staff expectations.”

Ronnie Webster, Executive Director of Commercial Services at the University of Glasgow, said the partnership would further improve campus amenities for students and employees alike.

“We are always looking to enhance our campus services and provide the best possible university experience. Having a Co-op on site will give students and staff convenient access to food, drinks and household essentials close to where they work and study,” he said.
