Why the In-Between Bits of the Day Matter More Than We Think

The Importance of Breakfast and After-School Care

Breakfast and after-school care can sometimes feel like the practical bits of the school day – the bookends that make family life work. But from what we see every day, these quieter moments often have a bigger impact than they get credit for. Research has shown that high-quality before- and after-school programs can have a positive effect on children’s social, emotional, and academic development (National Center for Education Statistics, 2020).

The Morning Routine

In the mornings, children arrive carrying all sorts with them. Some bounce in full of energy, others need a slower start. Having a familiar routine, friendly faces and a calm environment gives them space to arrive as they are – not already feeling rushed or behind before the school bell rings. This gentle start to the day can help reduce stress and anxiety, setting a positive tone for the rest of the day (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2019).

After-School Care

After school, it’s often a different story. Children are tired, overstimulated, and have spent hours concentrating, listening and navigating friendships. What they usually need most isn’t more structure, but the freedom to decompress. That might look like energetic play, creative activities, or simply sitting quietly with friends – all of which are equally valuable. According to a study by the Afterschool Alliance (2019), after-school programs can provide a safe and supportive environment for children to relax and recharge.

The Power of Choice

One thing we notice consistently is how much children benefit from being able to choose. Choosing how to spend their time, who to play with, or when to take a breather helps them feel in control of their day in small but important ways. It builds confidence, independence and emotional regulation – without it ever feeling like a “lesson”. This approach is supported by research on self-directed learning, which suggests that children who are given autonomy and agency in their learning tend to be more motivated and engaged (Hmelo-Silver, 2004).

A Positive Impact

As the term wraps up, it’s been lovely to see friendships strengthen, confidence grow, and children really make the space their own. These moments may be quieter than the classroom, but they play a powerful role in helping children feel settled, secure and ready for what comes next. By providing a supportive and nurturing environment, we can help children develop the skills and confidence they need to succeed in all areas of life.
