Unlocking the Joy of Language Learning: A Personal Journey
I still vividly remember the spark that ignited my passion for languages. Growing up in Dover, Kent, I was fortunate to be surrounded by the rich cultural diversity of Europe. The ease of traveling to France, Belgium, Holland, and beyond allowed me to experience firsthand the unique languages, customs, and traditions of each country. This early exposure not only deepened my appreciation for languages but also instilled in me a desire to learn and explore more.
A Foundation in Languages
My academic journey in languages began in high school, where I excelled in French, German, and Italian. I further pursued my interest in these languages at the university level, delving into their cultures as well. This comprehensive approach to language learning provided me with a solid foundation and fostered my ability to appreciate the nuances of each language. My experiences as an au pair girl in Paris, an assistant to a Count in the Auvergne, and a staff member at a colonie de vacances in Brittany were invaluable, offering immersive experiences that shaped my understanding of the languages and their cultural contexts.
Expanding Linguistic Horizons
The allure of the Spanish language soon captivated me, leading me to enroll in adult evening classes. Witnessing the rapid pace of native speakers and the vast diversity of the Spanish-speaking world only intensified my fascination. This passion prompted me to pursue a degree in Spanish, which included a term in Santiago de Compostela. The historic city, with its breathtaking cathedral and rich Galician Celtic traditions, presented a unique contrast to the vibrant culture of southern Spain, highlighting the multifaceted nature of the country. My academic pursuits also took me to Cuba for PhD research, a country known for its distinct cultural identity.
From Learner to Educator
Having navigated the challenges of language learning myself, including the complexities of Portuguese, I empathize with the journey of my students. Holding a teaching qualification, I have had the privilege of teaching Spanish, French, and English to adults in various educational settings. My career in exhibitions and tourism has further enriched my understanding of cultural exchange and communication. I find joy in guiding learners through their language acquisition journey, watching them achieve milestones, and sharing in their excitement as they begin to communicate effectively in their target language.
