Public told to be wary of ‘spoofing’ scams

Warning: Spoofing Scams on the Rise During “Scam Season”

As we enter a new year, Bank TSB is urging the public to be cautious of so-called “spoofing” scams, which have become increasingly prevalent during the post-holiday season. According to TSB, purchase fraud has risen by 11% year-over-year, accounting for a staggering 63% of all bank transfer fraud cases. This type of scam involves fraudsters tricking victims into paying for goods or services that do not exist or are not as described.

Most Targeted Items and Scam Tactics

Among the most targeted items affected by purchase scams in 2025 were concert tickets, football tickets, games consoles, pet deposits, electrical goods, and children’s toys. Cyber experts warn that these scams often involve “bank spoofing” attacks, where criminals contact victims and impersonate their bank or another trusted organization to trick them into revealing sensitive personal and financial information. Richard Daniels, Director of Fraud Prevention at TSB, notes that “scammers will be ramping up their activity with fake listings for goods and services that simply don’t exist.”

Staying Safe Online

To avoid falling victim to these scams, TSB advises consumers to only pay for an item if they can view and verify it in person. With the majority of fraud originating from social media platforms, it is essential to be cautious when making online purchases. As Daniels emphasizes, “stay safe online during the sales” by being vigilant and taking necessary precautions. By being aware of these potential threats and taking steps to protect themselves, individuals can significantly reduce their risk of falling prey to spoofing scams.
