Introduction to the Pirelli Scorpion Tyre
The Pirelli Scorpion tyre is a popular choice for Land Rover products, thanks to its aggressive tread pattern and good road characteristics. While not fully off-road orientated, these tyres are better than most when venturing into the wilderness. The Scorpion tyre has a rich history, dating back to its development for a little-known car company that was creating a new military vehicle for use in Dubai and other hot climate countries.
The History of the Pirelli Scorpion Tyre
When Pirelli was developing the Scorpion, the company created a unique tread design that would provide greater traction on sand dunes. Additionally, a Run-Flat safety system was implemented into the tyre, ensuring that even if the tyres were blown out due to firearms or a flat, the driver could continue driving to a safe location. This extra reinforcement also helped cope with the weight of the vehicle, which was nearly 3,500KGs. The Scorpion tyre was originally designed for the Lamborghini LM002, a military vehicle that required a tyre that could handle the harsh conditions of the desert.
Pirelli Collezione Department
In June 2023, Pirelli announced the reintroduction of the Pirelli Scorpion BK through their Collezione department. This department is dedicated to recreating classic tyres for iconic vehicles, such as the Lamborghini Countach and the original Fiat 500. The Collezione department is Pirelli’s way of paying homage to their heritage and providing collectors with authentic tyres for their classic cars. With the likes of Michelin creating their Classic department, it’s no surprise that Pirelli is following suit.
