How Kings Camps keep children safe in sport

As a parent, it’s natural to want the best for your child, and that includes ensuring their safety and well-being, especially when participating in sports and activities. This week, from 7-11 October 2024, the NSPCC Child Protection in Sport Unit is running a national campaign called “Keeping your child safe in sport week.” The goal of this campaign is to empower parents and carers with the knowledge and confidence to make informed decisions about their child’s participation in sports and activities.

Why is it important to prioritize child safety in sports?

Sports and activities play a vital role in a child’s development, promoting physical and emotional growth, social skills, and a sense of community. However, with the numerous activity clubs, camps, and organizations available, it can be overwhelming for parents to know where to start. The key is to ensure that the provider prioritizes the safety and well-being of your child. At Kings Camps, we take the safety and well-being of our participants very seriously, and our Child Safeguarding policy is readily available on our website and can be accessed via our “How it Works” page.

What to look for in a sports provider

When selecting a sports provider for your child, there are several key factors to consider. These include:

Key Safeguarding Measures

A safe environment, with risk assessments for the venue and facilities; an appointed officer, such as a designated welfare, safeguarding, or child protection officer; consent and emergency processes, including participation consent, completed contact details, and relevant medical details; procedures and processes for raising concerns and complaints; a safer recruitment policy, including appropriate references, DBS/PVG requests, training, and qualifications; safeguarding training for all staff; suitable supervision and ratios, following Ofsted guidance; and a code of practice, conduct, and behavior, outlining boundaries that staff and children should respect.

At Kings Camps, we prioritize these safeguarding measures to ensure the safety and well-being of our participants. Our staff undergo rigorous training, including Interactive Online Training and Online Learning courses, and our Head Office team receives training delivered by the NSPCC on safeguarding.

Supporting a Safer Sports Environment

As Sir Bradley Wiggins, advocate for the Keeping your Child Safe in Sport campaign, emphasizes, “We must make sport safe for children and make it easier for parents and all people in sport to recognize and understand how they themselves can support a safer sports environment.” By working together, we can create a safe and supportive environment for children to thrive in sports and activities.
