HMRC app usage surged in 2025

HMRC App Sees Significant Growth in Usage, Reflecting Shift to Digital Tax Management

The UK’s tax authority, HMRC, has reported a substantial increase in the use of its mobile app, with 4.2 million downloads in 2025, marking a significant milestone in the country’s transition to digital tax management. This surge in downloads has led to a 20% increase in logins, with users accessing the app 136 million times, up from the previous year. According to HMRC’s figures, the total number of annual app users has now surpassed 7.18 million, a notable rise from 5.09 million in the previous calendar year.

Growing Confidence in Digital Tax Management

The growth in app usage is a testament to the growing confidence among taxpayers in managing their tax affairs digitally. The HMRC app has become an essential tool for individuals to access their tax information, check their State Pension forecasts, and manage their Child Benefit and National Insurance (NI) claims. In 2025, almost 960,000 people used the Child Benefit area of the app, a significant increase of 160,000 from the previous year. Additionally, 383,000 people stored their NI number on the app, 70,000 more than in 2024.

Increased Adoption Among Older and Retired Users

Interestingly, the HMRC app has seen significant growth in adoption among older and retired users, particularly in checking State Pension forecasts. This demographic has traditionally been slower to adopt digital technologies, but the ease of use and convenience of the app have helped to bridge this gap. The app’s user-friendly interface and accessibility features have made it an essential tool for individuals of all ages to manage their tax affairs.

Expert Insights and Ambition for Digital Transformation

Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Chief Customer Officer, commented on the app’s success, stating, “The HMRC app has become one of the quickest and easiest ways to check your tax affairs, and we’ve seen even more customers embrace it this year. If you choose to use the app, you can access the information you need straight through your phone.” This reflects HMRC’s ambition to make it easier for customers to self-serve on straightforward tasks, promoting a more efficient and user-centric approach to tax management.
