Introduction to Language Learning with Heather
Bonjour, je m’appelle Heather. As a language learner and teacher, I’ve had the privilege of navigating the complexities of the French language, and I’m excited to share my journey with you. My personal language learning journey started in my early 20’s, when I arrived in France, like a typical Brit, super scared of opening my mouth and with literally just a handful of words like maison, merci, and baguette.
I listened a lot, read comics, and proceeded to learn the language in situ through immersion. As a result, I made all the hilarious mistakes that English speakers make when learning the language, so I’m perfectly situated to help you recognize them (and encourage you to accept their inevitability) but also to help you continue speaking when you do make mistakes. To remind you that perfection takes time and only comes with repeated attempts at communication, best accompanied by a smile. I smiled so much (from nerves) and I laughed, laughed, and laughed.
My Teaching Philosophy
Upon my return to the UK in 2017, I looked for a teaching method that put the joy of learning the language at the very top of its priority list as I had read about how we learn quicker when we are relaxed. Knowing from experience, that if I had picked up a grammar book when I had arrived in France, I would have never dared to try, so Language For Fun focuses on communication over perfection, I knew that it was the teaching method for me. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I do.
With over 22 years of experience living in France, completely submerged in French culture and rarely speaking English, I set up the Guildford and Godalming branch of Language For Fun, to teach the language that I love, to adults in small, sociable, fun, friendly groups. I now provide classes at 8 different levels, with excellent tutors, to guide you through your language learning journey.
Teaching with a Personal Touch
It has been a great pleasure to help so many people to improve and perfect their French conversation skills, from complete beginner to confident conversationalist. I can honestly say that I really do teach language for FUN. My approach is centered around creating a relaxed and supportive environment, where students feel encouraged to speak and make mistakes, without fear of judgment.
