DYNO engineer rescues dog from fox hole in East London

Dog Stuck in Fox Den Rescued by DYNO Engineer in East London

A dramatic rescue operation was carried out in Hackney Marshes, East London, when a small black Patterdale terrier named Olive got stuck in a fox’s den. The five-year-old dog was out for a walk with her owner Rob when she decided to explore the area and ventured down a fox hole. However, she soon found herself trapped, prompting a rescue effort that would involve firefighters, an RSPCA animal collection officer, and a DYNO engineer.

The Rescue Effort

The incident occurred on Wednesday, 2nd January, just before 8am, when Rob realized his dog was missing. A search of the area led him to a mound with a fox’s den burrowed into it, and he soon discovered that Olive was stuck inside. Firefighters from the Bethnal Green fire station in London were called to the scene, and they brought in an RSPCA animal collection officer to assist with the rescue. The firemen used a pole with a camera to try to locate Olive, but unfortunately, they were unable to see her due to the depth of the den.

Due to the high risk of the den collapsing, the firefighters were unable to dig Olive out, and after hours of trying, they decided to call in a DYNO engineer for assistance. Jamie Gifford, an engineer from the DYNO Drains East London franchisee, arrived at the scene around 2pm, 30 minutes after the call, and used his CCTV unit to try to locate Olive. With a crowd of 50 people watching, Jamie took it upon himself to save the dog, digging two meters down and using his CCTV device to locate Olive, who was trapped approximately three meters down the hole.

A Successful Rescue

Jamie coaxed Olive with doggy treats before carefully pulling her to safety, reuniting her with a relieved Rob. The rescue was a success, with Olive being pulled out of the hole at 3:45 pm, after being stuck for over eight hours. Although she had a few scratches on her face, Olive was otherwise unharmed and has since recovered from her ordeal. Rob praised Jamie’s efforts, saying, “He did a really good job… I was so scared for her. He covered her head so soil would not fall on her.”

Jamie’s selfless actions were hailed as heroic, with the local fire brigade praising his efforts. When asked about the rescue, Jamie said, “I don’t see myself as a hero, but when real heroes such as the local fire brigade say ‘Mate you’re a hero’ it definitely makes you feel like you have done something heroic.” The successful rescue is a testament to the importance of teamwork and quick thinking in emergency situations.
