Barking Mad Franchisees Take First Girls’ Holiday in 30+ Years, but with a Difference – to Feed Stray Dogs in Cape Verde

Introduction to a Heartwarming Story of Friendship and Compassion

At Barking Mad, a community that thrives on the passion, kindness, and dedication of its franchisees, two members stand out for their extraordinary commitment to making a difference. Julie and Shirley, not only exemplary business partners but also lifelong friends, are embarking on a journey to Cape Verde, combining their holiday with a noble cause: supporting a local charity that feeds and cares for stray dogs and cats on the islands.

A Friendship Forged Over Decades

Julie and Shirley’s friendship began in their early teens and has endured through the years, a testament to the strength of their bond. This friendship has been a constant source of support and joy, even as their paths diverged and converged over the years. According to Rebecca de Chair, Group Marketing Manager at Barking Mad, “Their friendship is the kind that clicks back into place effortlessly, despite life’s changes.”

From Friends to Business Partners

Their decision to join Barking Mad as franchisees brought their professional paths together, combining their skills and passion for animal care. “Julie and Shirley are known for their warmth, enthusiasm, and professionalism,” Rebecca noted, highlighting their commitment to providing the best possible experience for the dogs in their care. Working together has not only been successful but also a source of daily joy, with laughter being an integral part of their workday.

A Holiday with a Purpose

After decades, Julie and Shirley are taking their first holiday together since they were 17, but this trip is unique. They’ve chosen Cape Verde, not just for its beauty, but to support a local charity dedicated to feeding and caring for stray dogs and cats. The charity, ‘Saving the Beautiful Cats and Dogs of Cape Verde,’ relies on donations and volunteers to continue its vital work. Julie and Shirley’s involvement includes participating in a feeding trip, for which the charity charges volunteers €20, but each outing costs around €300 to run, underscoring the need for support.

Supporting the Charity

Thanks to TUI’s generosity, they have been granted 20kg of extra charity baggage to carry essential supplies to the charity. The items most needed include flea, tick & worming medications, first-aid items, collars, leads, harnesses, toys, and blankets. They have also set up a JustGiving page for monetary donations towards food, foster care, and medical support. This effort is a testament to their compassion and the values that Barking Mad embodies.

Making a Difference

Julie and Shirley’s Barking Mad business will be closed from 8–18th March while they volunteer and travel. Their story serves as an inspiration, showcasing how personal and professional passions can come together to make a real difference. As Rebecca de Chair expressed, “Their compassion truly represents what Barking Mad is all about.” Upon their return, they will resume bookings, undoubtedly with stories and experiences that will inspire many within the Barking Mad community.
