GCSE Results Day: A Guide for Students and Parents
With GCSE Results Day just around the corner, students and parents alike are filled with a mix of emotions – excitement, nervousness, and anticipation. While many will be celebrating their achievements, others may be facing disappointment or frustration if they haven’t achieved the desired grades, particularly in Maths and English. As a parent, it’s natural to want to reassure and support your child during this time.
Understanding the Implications of Not Achieving a Grade 4
If your child hasn’t achieved a Grade 4 in their Maths or English exams, it’s essential to understand the implications and the next steps. The first thing to do is to speak with your child’s school and the sixth form, college, or provider they plan to attend. They will have dedicated staff who can provide specific advice on what to do next. It’s crucial not to assume the worst and to seek guidance from the right people to make informed decisions.
Resits: What You Need to Know
In the UK education system, students who don’t achieve a Grade 4 or above in their Maths and/or English GCSEs must continue to study and resit until they secure the grade or reach the age of 18. Depending on the planned route after Year 11, there might be an option to study for an equivalent or comparable qualification rather than GCSE. Your child’s course or apprenticeship provider will be able to advise on this.
Preparing for Resits
The first block of resits takes place in November, with exams starting on November 5th and running until November 11th, and results being published in early January. It’s essential to start preparing as soon as possible, as your child will need to refresh their memories and revise the content, knowledge, and skills to apply them in the exam. When speaking to your child’s course provider, ask about their support for preparation, including timetabled lessons to review the content and skills.
Seeking Help and Support
