Meet Beccy and Lizzie: Twin Sisters Who Achieved Success with Kumon
Twin sisters, Beccy and Lizzie, have been studying both the Kumon Maths and English Programmes for the past six years, at the Thornbury study centre. Their dedication and hard work have paid off, as they successfully passed their 11+ exams and secured places at Grammar school. This achievement is a testament to the effectiveness of the Kumon method, which focuses on building strong academic foundations in maths and English.
Developing Study Skills from an Early Age
The girls’ mother, Jackie, reflected on why she originally enrolled her daughters with Kumon. She explained that because her daughters’ birthdays are in September, they were the oldest in their year at school and had started to find their schoolwork rather easy and unstimulating. Jackie wanted to provide them with additional support and challenges, which is when she discovered Kumon. She knew Kumon Instructor Trina from the gym and, after hearing about her Kumon centre, decided to enrol the girls onto both programmes.
Preparing for the 11+ Exams
The Kumon Study Programmes are designed to build good academic foundations in maths and English, which are essential for success in the 11+ exams. Although the programmes are not specifically designed to match the style of questions or topics covered in the 11+ maths or English tests, Kumon students often benefit from their thorough subject knowledge, mental arithmetic, and speed in these tests. Kumon helped Beccy and Lizzie develop the skills needed to tackle the 11+ exams, including mental reasoning, working under timed conditions, and building good stamina, speed, accuracy, and confidence.
Achieving Success with Kumon
Commenting on how the programmes helped prepare her daughters for the 11+ exams, Jackie said, “The girls already had good study skills and knew how to pace themselves through the 11+ exam. They were used to working in timed conditions and an exam environment, thanks to Kumon.” Jackie also expressed her preference for Kumon over 11+ private tutoring, stating that Kumon offers a more comprehensive approach to learning, with daily study allowing for progress in small incremental steps.
Developing Fundamental Life and Study Skills
Aside from supporting with exam preparation, Kumon helps students develop a range of fundamental life and study skills, including time management, independent learning, focus, and problem-solving. Beccy and Lizzie have developed these skills, which will serve them well throughout their secondary education and beyond. Jackie explains, “Over the years, Kumon has helped immensely. My daughters have developed several study skills; they can now manage their time effectively, work independently, focus and solve tasks, and they have a good sense of responsibility.”
A Bright Future Ahead
Both Beccy and Lizzie have strong career aspirations, with Beccy wanting to work for NASA and Lizzie wanting to become a vet. Their mother, Jackie, couldn’t be prouder of their achievements and commitment to their Kumon studies. With their strong foundation in maths and English, they are well-equipped to excel in their future studies and pursue their dreams.
